Spell and Sound Charts have been created to compliment your work as a French Language Teacher in ways that allow students to speak French with confidence.
At Spell and Sound we;
- Recognise your importance; without you there would be no class to begin with,
- Assist you to explain French language sounds to native English speakers,
- Assist you to describe language spellings, accents and letters to native English speakers,
- Offer your students handy tips to help motivate them to keep trying in class
You will notice that this site contains many tutorials where students are asked to contact their teacher for further advice, even though there are opportunities for students to hear French sounds made by genuine French native speakers.
spellandsound.com does not claim to be the “last word” on French phonemes and graphemes, instead, offering students a starting point for their learning. Students will always need your expertise to guide them.
Phoneme Groupings within Spell and Sound Charts
Many French language students struggle to distinguish between similar sounds in French.
Spell and Sound French charts group together similar (to the English speaker’s ear) French sounds, to make them easier to attempt.
Your students will find new confidence when they discover that they can “have a go” at any French sound, rather than not attempting the word or sound at all.
When students have mastered the simple, grouped sounds, with your guidance, they can move on to the more subtle sounds of French.
Where similar sounding phonemes have been grouped together, additional information has been placed on this website including International Phonetic Alphabet symbols and sounds to help beginners differentiate between the more subtle sounds.
Pure IPA French Charts
Sometimes only the International Phonetic Alphabet symbols are required, so we have provided a chart that contains individual IPA symbols and French examples to demonstrate the spellings for each symbol, in our unique format – alphabetical order.
All our phonics charts are in alphabetical order, perfect for the student who reads more than they hear.
Audio Lounge
If you’re looking for a resource to help your students study their own pronunciation, take a look at our Audio Lounge.
The Audio Lounge is a place where anyone can record and playback their own voice to compare it to that of our resident French native.
It’s a great way to fine tune pronunciation skills!
At the end of the day
Spell and Sound French Charts are a guide and tool for mostly beginners and intermediates (although advanced students could benefit also).
French language students that have difficulty “hearing” the subtle sounds of French, will discover that Spell and Sound French Charts provide an excellent starting point to tune into the romantic French language.
